Drum brakes are a type of hydraulic power braking system that uses a brake cylinder to multiply power and transfer pressure from the main cylinder using brake lines. Drum brakes use applied leverage to force a reservoir full of brake fluid through valves, steel lines, and rubber hoses into hydraulic calipers and wheel cylinders.
Disc brakes use a hydraulic caliper to press the brake pads against a spinning disc (or rotor) to create friction in order to slow the rotation of a car’s wheels and axles. When you hit the brake pedal, a stopping force is implemented on the wheels through the disc brakes to reduce the rotational speed or to stop the vehicle completely.
Many automobiles use a computerized anti-lock brake system (ABS) in addition to the braking system already in place. ABS is a safety system that prevents the wheels from locking up and skidding due to snow, gravel, or other slippery surfaces.
Sensors in the ABS monitor each wheel's rotation speed. If it notices a wheel is turning slower than the others due to locking up, it reduces pressure in the braking system’s hydraulic valves and also reduces the force on the wheel and allows it to spin faster. This allows you to have more control over your vehicle instead of sliding helplessly.
